Angler Profile: Dave Swett

By NHBF

Dave Swett David Swett had just boated his 2nd five lb. largemouth of the day. The lunker sealed the deal and Swett cruised to victory at the American Bass Association Tournament of Champions. The site was Great East Lake, and the date was August 23 and 24, 1997. Swett and his partner had just beaten the best of the best in New Hampshire tournament fishing.

This is David Swett's favorite moment in fishing. Ask him in a few months and he may have a new favorite. Swett, 46 years of age and from Berwick Maine, will soon be making his first trip to the Citgo B.A.S.S. Federation National Championship. Amateur BASS fishing's Super Bowl will be held on the Red River out of Shreveport Louisiana this April 15-20.

David Swett, founder and President of Clearwater Bassmasters qualified for the National Championship by placing first on the New Hampshire Team at the 2001 Eastern Regional, held in September on Kerr Reservoir in South Hill, Virginia. Swett placed 17th overall with a final weight of 13-lbs. 14 oz.

Swett is a long-time member of the New Hampshire BASS Federation and over the years has been one of the States most consistent anglers. He has qualified for 7 State Teams and his diverse fishing background should serve him well on the muddy Red River as he attempts to make it two in a row for New Hampshire and follow Harry Charcalis's footsteps to the 2002 BASS Masters Classic.

The personable Swett, always with a story to tell, first grabbed a rod at the tender age of 8. Born in Dover NH, he trout fished until his mid 20's when he was introduced to bass fishing by another longtime NH Federation angler, Ray Randlett. That first trip to Kingston Lake in the early 80's ignited the fire. He hasn't trout fished since. He began his tournament career in 1986 by fishing local events in Maine and New Hampshire. He is a largemouth specialist and prefers to work with a flippin' stick and heavy tackle. Favorite lure is a black and blue Hi-Tek jig. Plastic worms and spider jigs are also high on his list. His favorite Lake is Winnipesaukee, his biggest largemouth bass weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz and was caught at Lake Arrowhead (Maine) in 1987, his biggest smallmouth to date weighed 5 lbs. 3 oz. and was caught in 1994 out of Winnipesaukee.

When not fishing or telling stories, Swett can be found hunting deer in upstate Maine and also in Canada. His biggest Buck to date weighed 255 lbs. and was the 3rd largest deer shot in Maine in 1997. Swett lists gambling and riding his Harley as his other hobbies. David has 2 kids, David Jr. (19) and Ashley (17). His wife is the fabulous Judy. Swett is the President of Hall Brothers roofing, centered in Berwick Maine. He fishes from a bright red Triton TR-21/Mercury rig. He lists as sponsors the following companies: Northern Bass Supply, Plouffe Drywall, Northeast Hydraulics, Hall Brothers Roofing, NH BASS Federation, Judy and the Kids.
